Internationalism and support of national liberation struggles have
always been core values of the Freedom Archives. During the last six
months we had multiple opportunities to deepen our understanding and
commitment as we:

Traveled to Palestine as part of a Political Prisoner and Labor
Solidarity Delegation. By far the highlight of our recent work was
our participation in a delegation of prison, labor, and
scholar-activists from the US who traveled to Palestine. We were the
first US delegation to Palestine focused on political imprisonment
and designed to strengthen the solidarity between Palestinian and US
prisoners. We were empowered and humbled by stories of the ways many
Palestinians maintain their culture and dignity while resisting
daily land confiscations, house demolitions, restrictions to water
access and movement, torture, mass imprisonment, and summary executions.

Published a pamphlet of statements by US-held political prisoners in
solidarity with Palestine. Political imprisonment is a pillar of
Zionist settler colonialism and its brutal occupation. In solidarity
with Palestinian political prisoners, we published a pamphlet of
statements from US-held political prisoners in support of Palestine.
With the assistance of Birzeit University’s Institute for Women’s
Studies, this pamphlet was translated into Arabic and printed. We
were able to distribute nearly 500 copies throughout our trip. We
were struck by the vitality of the political and cultural resistance
in Palestine—especially the reverence and respect paid to political
prisoners, the hundreds of martyrs, and the many sacrifices of
    Palestinian society.

Added new collections to the Archives on the Stop-the-Draft Week
Oakland Induction Center demonstrations against the war in Viet Nam,
and scanned issues of the anti-imperialist periodical Seize the Time
and Tricontinental, the influential Cuban quarterly publication.
The scans are freely available as downloads on our website.
Preservation of this important history is central to our mission.
We are proud of the work our interns have done to preserve these
significant materials and have appreciated watching them grow
intellectually and personally. Since the beginning of the year,
we’ve also done interviews on local radio stations, sponsored a
vibrant jazz concert in our storefront, participated in SF History
Days at the Old Mint, published articles, and attended an archival
conference in Seattle—all geared to advance our mission—to keep the
history, culture, and spirit of resistance alive.

Continued work on our video on little-known yet key chapters in
Chican@ movement history. Our upcoming documentary on the Chican@
Movement, tentatively entitled Symbols of Resistance, focuses on the
mid-1970s as a pivotal moment for community struggles against severe
repression, movement building, and grassroots resistance. We plan to
complete the film over the summer and release it in the fall—with a
premiere showing in Denver in November 2016.

Our recent travels have deepened our commitment to the importance and
urgency of preserving the history and culture of resistance!
